Minister for Loneliness Appointed

During Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 17th January 2018, it was announced that Tracey Crouch MP had been appointed as Minister for Loneliness following the publication of a report by the Jo Cox Loneliness Commission in December 2017. The report made several recommendations including the development of a UK-wide strategy focusing on addressing loneliness, the appointment of a lead minister as well as clear methods to measure progress, and guidance to the public in responding effectively.

Over the past year, Linking Lives UK has been working with three other national Christian charities as part of the campaign coordinated by the Jo Cox Loneliness Commission.  The charities are Livability, The Gift of Years and Pilgrims’ Friend Society. We took part in a social media campaign focusing on older people in March 2017 and encouraged churches to also take part. These discussions are continuing into 2018 and our aim is to raise the profile of the issue of loneliness among churches and encourage involvement in national initiative such as Big Lunch on or around 3rd June, and other national awareness days or activities.

We were pleased to be able to talk about this work on both Premier Radio and UCB on the day that this story was launched and we very much hope that this will act as a springboard for many churches and individuals to consider ways of addressing this important issue in their communities. You can hear the full UCB interview here.
