Linking Lives UK Christmas Appeal

As we come up to the Christmas period, many of us are looking forward to spending time with friends and family, eating together and opening presents. There are, however, around 500,000 people in the UK who will spend Christmas Day alone this year, meaning that this could include someone within each of our immediate neighbourhoods.

Linking Lives UK is working hard throughout the year to combat social isolation and loneliness among older people in particular and we do this by working with churches and Christian organisations to set up visiting projects across the UK. These projects enable volunteers to visit older people once a week for an hour and this social interaction often has a significant impact on the lives of all those involved. Visits often lead to greater involvement in social events and activities, engagement with sources of support in the community such as practical help and health advice, and improved health, well-being and confidence.

Our aim this year is to establish a minimum of 12 new Linking Lives projects across the UK, each of which will begin reaching out to 20 older people by the end of their first year of operation. We are currently working with 26 projects around the country.

Asked recently to explain the difference that her Linking Lives visitor had made to her life, one of our friends answered:

‘“Total transformation”. That’s the important one. But there are many, many other gifts. I’ve met new people, been to new places and done new things. I feel more hooked into life, more engaged, and not so lonely.

Because of the people I’ve met and the things I’ve done, I feel more alive, more stimulated, and less bored. I’ve been blessed with loving, caring, practical support in the dark times when I’ve needed it most. I don’t have to walk alone anymore.’

We would like to invite you to partner with us this Christmas by making a donation towards the work of Linking Lives UK. Whether you are able to donate £10 or over £100 your support will make a difference to the lives of those for whom loneliness and social isolation is a daily reality.

To make a contribution, follow the link to our My Donate page and follow the instructions, or go to our Facebook Page where a donation can also be made by credit card.

Thank you for your support.
